Police #1

You are taken to the local police station and tell them your story. You start at the very beginning, Colton reaching out to you online, secretly dating, moving in with him, and the downward spiral that follows. You detail out the coercion, the beatings, the drugs, and customer quotas you were forced to meet every night. The officers and attorney are polite and appear willing to help you out. They believe your story, that you are a victim and not a criminal, and they offer you the chance to testify against Colton. Lawyers and detectives treat you with respect and tell you that everything will be alright once Colton is behind bars. You decide to believe them and agree to testify against Colton. You stay at a local shelter until the day of the court date. The night be- fore trial you have a nightmare of Colton dragging you across the road to your family’s house. You watch as he sets fire to your family home, forcing you to watch the whole thing. You wake up, drenched in sweat, feeling sick to your stomach. All of the threats Colton made about your family come rushing back and you decide then and there that it is not possible for you to testify against Colton tomorrow. And besides the threats, a large part of you still loves him. You cannot betray him and face him in court, so you decide to skip town and venture out on your own.
