When I was 12 years old, I received a strong calling on my life to become a missionary; I was going to go to foreign countries and do amazing things for the gospel of Jesus Christ! Unfortunately that calling never seemed to pan out the older I got.
So there I was, almost 30 and feeling restless and purposeless. Yes, I knew that as a believer in Christ my mission was (and still is) to share the gospel, disciple others, and reach the nations for God’s Kingdom. But I kept having this nagging feeling that there was more that God wanted me to do…some specific thing to fight for and move towards.
So, I began praying that God would reveal to me what that purpose was.
He very quickly answered! I began to have thoughts about victims of sex trafficking and how I could help them. I started to dream that I would one day join with an organization that went into foreign countries to sweep in and rescue women from sex trafficking. It was all so daring and adventurous, and I was sure I had finally found my calling!
Then, a friend asked me what God was teaching me. I shared with her all of the revelations He had shown me about how I could go rescue modern day slaves. She stopped me in my tracks and said (my paraphrase), “You know it happens here in Lancaster County, PA, don’t you? We’re forming an organization to help fight human trafficking, and you should see how you can get involved.”
I was stunned. I couldn’t believe that women were being abused like that in America, let alone in my backyard! So I started attending task force meetings and learning all I could about the issue and how we could fight it.
That was almost 7 years ago. Since then, I have served as the Task Force Director and organized fundraisers, and I continue to serve on the Board of Directors and speak at a few events for this grassroots organization now known as North Star Initiative.
God has faithfully guided us to the point where we are today…all because of the hard work that each of the dedicated staff, volunteers, and donors who has listened to God’s calling in our lives has done. This work has led to The Harbor, a home waiting to open its doors in Lancaster County to receive survivors of sex trafficking. The Harbor will provide them with a safe, comforting environment where they can journey through the healing process of finding that restoration and freedom that they so desperately need.
So…what’s your calling? If you’re not sure, why don’t you ask God today? He’ll be sure to point you in the right direction.
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” Isaiah 30:21 (NIV)
